Lesson 5 – Prokofiev – Peter and the Wolf

Peter and the Wolf is a musical story written by composer Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. Each character is represented by an instrument in the orchestra:
- the bird played by the flue
- the duck played by the oboe
- the cat played by the clarinet
- the grandfather played by the bassoon
- the wolf by three French horns
- Peter played by the string instruments
- the hunter’s shotguns played by the drums.

Parents: While watching and listening to the video, please discuss the following questions with your child.
- Listen to the unique sound of each orchestral instrument. Can you tell the characters/instruments apart?
- Which is your favourite character/instrument? Why?
- Listen to each character carefully. Based on what you hear, think of one word or phrase to describe each character.
Challenge Activity (optional):
- Listen to the music again and create your own story of Peter and the Wolf. Make sure your story has a beginning, middle, and end. You can tell the story orally, write it down, or draw a picture.
